Rapid clicking
Repeated fast clicks commonly happen when the starter circuit tries to engage but available voltage drops too low.
One solid click
A single click can indicate the solenoid is attempting to engage, but it can also occur with poor current delivery or another starting-circuit issue.
What not to do
Avoid buying a starter solely because the car clicks. Battery and connection testing are often faster and cheaper diagnostic steps.
