1. Describe the vehicle and problem
Have the year, make, model, engine if known, exact location and symptom description ready.
2. Make the location workable
When possible, park on firm, level ground with safe space around the vehicle. Avoid locations that expose the mechanic to moving traffic.
3. Diagnosis or repair
The first visit may be diagnostic if the cause is not established. A symptom does not always identify a part.
4. Know when the job needs a shop
If safe completion requires equipment that cannot reasonably be brought to the vehicle, moving the car to a repair facility may be the right answer.
